Congress Leader Ajay Maken Accuses Arvind Kejriwal of ‘Treason’ Over Yamuna Poison Remarks

During a press conference on Tuesday, the former Union Minister called for a detailed investigation into Kejriwal's remarks, as well as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Haryana government’s role in the controversy.

If Arvind Kejriwal is lying about poison being mixed in the water, it is treason. If the Haryana government is at fault, strict action should be taken. But if Kejriwal is spreading baseless rumors, he should also face consequences, Maken remarked.

The Controversy: Kejriwal’s Poison Allegations

The controversy erupted after Arvind Kejriwal, during a public address on Monday, alleged that Delhi’s water supply had been poisoned and accused the Haryana government of a deliberate attempt to harm Delhi residents. Kejriwal went as far as to label it as a planned genocide.

These explosive remarks have triggered a political storm in both Delhi and Haryana. Haryana’s Chief Minister, Nayab Singh Saini, has threatened to file a defamation suit against Kejriwal, calling his statements “irresponsible and defamatory.

In response, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) CEO released a statement to the Chief Secretary, asserting that Kejriwal's allegations were factually incorrect and without any basis.

Ajay Maken’s Stand: Only Congress Can Fight BJP

Ajay Maken also criticized AAP’s growing support among INDIA bloc allies, including the Samajwadi Party (SP). He urged opposition allies to recognize Congress as the primary force capable of challenging the BJP in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.

The Congress has always been the strongest opposition to the BJP. Weakening the Congress by supporting AAP will only benefit the BJP, Maken said.

Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years, has struggled in recent elections, failing to win a single seat in the 2015 and 2020 Assembly elections. Meanwhile, AAP dominated these polls, winning 67 seats in 2015 and 62 seats in 2020.

Delhi Assembly Elections 2025: The Road Ahead

The upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, scheduled for February 5, have raised the stakes for all major political players. With a total of 699 candidates contesting for 70 seats, the battle for Delhi is set to be fierce.

The results, to be announced on February 8, will determine whether AAP can retain its dominant position or if Congress can make a comeback amid the growing political turbulence.
